Act of Contrition

Which one do you have memorized?

Here is a relevant excerpt from a project I started a while back but haven’t yet finished…

Just don’t say “hardly sorry” by mistake!

        😦

I know. I haven’t been saying it all my life long. There are so many prayers to memorize and I’ve only been doing this a few years. Coming in, the only prayer I knew by heart was, “Now I lay me down to sleep…”

And the Act of Contrition is usually posted in the Confessional. I do find that I’ve memorized more than I realize sometimes.

        I keep trying.

    I have the 70’s vesrion memorized –
O my God, I am heartily sorry for
having offended you, and I detest
all my sins, because of Your just
punishments, but most of all because
they offend You, my God, who are
all-good and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of
Your grace, to sin no more and to
avoid the near occasion of sin.

The version I learned was from the late 50s. Similar to Beth’s, above, but with “Thee” replacing “You”, and “Thy” replacing “Your”; plus “art all good” instead of “are all good.”
