I was reading this morning the introduction to a book that someone forwarded to me (in electronic form), and it contained this quotation:

If ever there was a time that demanded the assiduity of the pastor in explaining the Sacrament of Confirmation it is doubtless the present, when there are found in the Church of God many by whom it is altogether omitted, while very few study to derive from it the fruit of divine grace which its worthy reception imparts.

Where does the quotation come from? The Catechism of the Council of Trent, published in 1566 – i.e., almost 450 years ago!

If catechesis concerning the Sacrament of Confirmation was urgent then, I’m at a loss for words to describe how critical it is now.
