We had a scenic and uneventful four hour drive through the winding mountain roads and arrived early this evening in the town of Jalpan (pronounced “Hall-pon”), where Blessed Junípero Serra built his first mission church during the years 1751-1758. This church is dedicated to St. James the Apostle, commonly known in Spanish as St. James, the Slayer of Moors.

A photo of the Jalpan Mission that I took in 2006.

In the morning we’ll set out for visits to three of the other missions (in Tancoyol, Tilaco, and Landa), returning back to Jalpan in the early evening for Mass and dinner. On Sunday we’ll see the fifth mission, in the town of Concá.
