Mustard Soup

Soup was never a big part of our family menu when I was growing up and I didn’t eat it often after I moved out on my own either. But since coming to Europe, where it is a common starter for meals, I have had to get used to eating it on a regular basis. And I’ve come to appreciate it a lot more.

While in Holland, among the new things I tried was mustard soup – something that I did not at first expect would taste very good, but I ended up being very pleasantly surprised.

It was not a strong or edgy flavor at all: very smooth and savory.

I looked up some recipes online and it appears that everyone has his own recipe for this dish, which apparently is fairly common in the Netherlands. I do know that the one I had, which was homemade, was made with vegetable bouillon and it had bits of ham in it.
