The Pope Speaks to You and to Me

Alluding to the terrible violence against Christians in the Middle East and other parts of the world during his General Audience today, Pope Francis had these important and challenging words to say to fellow Christians:

Christ Carrying the Cross, by El Greco

When I hear that so many Christians in the world are suffering, am I indifferent, or is it as if one of my own family members were suffering? When I think about or hear it said that so many Christians are persecuted – or even give their life for the faith – does it touch my heart, or does this not faze me? Am I open to that brother or sister… who is giving his or her life for Jesus Christ? Do we pray for each other?

I will ask you a question, but do not respond out loud, only in the heart: How many of you pray for persecuted Christians? How many? Each should respond in his heart. Do I pray for that brother, for that sister, who is in difficulty for professing and defending his or her faith?
