Life without Internet

Well, it’s not that I don’t have anything to say; it’s just that we’re going on day two without internet here in my part of Rome.

On Thursday there was a fire in an underground utilities tunnel right smack in the center of the historic part of the city. It didn’t affect us at first, but since yesterday afternoon we have been cut off also while they rewire the city.

A photo I took from the bus today. One of like five manholes that was opened. There were also spools of cable, wires running down the street (figuratively), and Cisco® boxes around.

(It reminds me of a story I once read about a woman in Ukraine or someplace like that who was scavenging for some sort of metal and in the process sliced through the main cable that brought internet into the country…)

This place where the fire was is right near the Senate building. I have my theories (involving Italian politics)…

Anyhow, for the time being I only have the weak cell signal that I can get in certain parts of my room – if the wind outside is blowing in the right direction.

Happy weekend!
