New Camera

I recently acquired a new Canon point-and-shoot camera – a combination of reasonable price and advanced features, including a 20x optical zoom.

My previous (overpriced and overrated) camera had started to decline noticeably, to the point where by midyear last school year I had to “photoshop” practically every photo I took (and although I am not a very skilled photographer, I’m pretty sure it was more and more the camera’s fault).

I tried out my new camera’s 20x zoom today when I was standing at the bus stop near St. Peter’s Basilica. As they say in Italian, ecco!

Those people walked up a looooootttttt of stairs to get to that perch.

Not bad, huh? If my estimates are correct I was about 300 yards away from the center of the dome (i.e. ground level distance); so factoring in the height of the dome I think I was about 1000 feet away from the unsuspecting folks in the photo.

FYI, the singular of ‘papparazzi’ is papparazzo.

Did you know that two space shuttles stacked on top of each other could fit inside the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica?

Height of the Space Shuttle Discovery = 184 ft.
Internal height of St. Peter’s Dome = approx. 385 ft.

Nice. Feel like we should chip in, since we benefit so much from your photos! 😀

I have a Canon camera myself and I love it. Good luck with yours.

Great photo! And WE climbed up all of those steps inside a very narrow (and potentially claustrophobic!) stairway. But the view was worth every step…
