Our Lady of Pompei

I unexpectedly had the opportunity to attend Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Pompei this evening, through the good offices of some friends who happened to be in the area with a rental car!

A cell phone photo of the high altar, with the famous Marian image in it.

At the end of the evening Mass they cover the image until morning by means of a mechanical screen that rises in front of it. This is, of course, accompanied by much emotional applause from the full congregation.

I have to say, this is one of the most beautiful shrines I have ever visited. I don’t have any more photos because I hadn’t expected to go there, so didn’t bring my camera.

The shrine is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and was commissioned by Blessed Bartolo Longo, the remarkable man whom I mentioned in a prior post. It sits in the valley beneath the active volcano, Mount Vesuvius.
