Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran – otherwise known as the Pope’s Cathedral. The Basilica of St. John Lateran has a Latin inscription on the front that says, translated, “The Mother and Head of All the Churches of the City and of the World”.

We must pray for the Pope daily (I like to offer the first Our Father of the Rosary for his health and protection). But today, on this important feast day, we can say a special prayer:

O Lord, in union with millions of believers, and prostrate here at your feet, we beg you to save, defend, and long preserve the Vicar of Christ, Pope Francis, the Father of the glorious society of souls, our own Father. Today and every day he prays for us, fervently offering to you the sacred Victim of love and peace. Turn then, O Lord, your loving eyes upon us, who, forgetful as it were of ourselves, pray now above all things for him. Unite our prayers with his, and receive them into the bosom of your infinite mercy, as a most sweet perfume of that living and efficacious charity, in which the children of the Church are united to their Father. All that he asks of you today we too ask with him. Whether he sorrows or rejoices, or whenever he offers the Victim of love for his people, we wish to be united with him. We desire that the utterance of our souls should be one with his. Mercifully grant, O Lord, that none of us be far from his mind and heart during the hour of his prayer, and when he offers to you the sacrifice of your blessed Son. And in the moment that he, our most revered Pontiff, holding in his hands the very Body of Jesus Christ, shall say to the people over the Chalice of blessing the words: The peace of the Lord be always with you, be pleased, O Lord, to cause your most sweet peace to descend with a new and manifest power into our hearts, and upon all the nations of mankind. Amen.
