Christ Learning How to Walk

I recently saw this image on a colleague’s blog and wanted to share it with you all. It is an illustration from a late medieval Book of Hours (prayer book with the Divine Office), belonging to Catherine de Clèves. And it shows the Holy Family: Joseph does his carpentry work, Mary weaves, and Jesus… learns how to walk!

I wish the image quality were better; I’d like to see what is in the speech bubble coming from our Lord’s mouth.

I have to say, until I saw this image, I don’t think I had ever thought much about Jesus as a toddler. It’s a great image!

I have a reproduction of the hours of Catherine of Cleves. It is plate 92, the Holy Family at Work (Saturday hours of the Virgin – sext). The Latin legend says “I am your solace.”
