Fatima and Lourdes

Some impressions of two very important Marian shrines –

Fatima:

The old Basilica, which is beautiful. The new one is ugly.

The interior of the Chapel of the Apparitions – the original chapel is the little building behind the statue of Our Lady; the Blessed Sacrament is kept in there – with the famous statue of Our Lady of Fatima and a sanctuary where Mass is celebrated.

Following the prayer of the rosary at night, there is a candlelight procession around the plaza in front of the old Basilica (background) and Chapel of the Apparitions (left). A copy of the statue is carried in procession.

Lourdes:

There are three basilicas in this photo: the Basilica of St. Pius X (which is underground), the Rosary Basilica (the lower part of the church you see in the distance), and the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception (the upper church in the distance).

The famous grotto where Our Lady appeared to St. Bernadette and said, “I am the Immaculate Conception”.

Each night there is a rosary and candlelight procession, though this one was special, since it was also the 80th anniversary of the canonization of St. Bernadette.
