Cardinals in Town

A lot of the cardinals – over 180, I think – are here in Rome right now for the consistory (ceremony at which more cardinals will be ‘created’, as the terminology goes).

The ecclesiastical tailors have updated their inventories accordingly. Gammarelli’s always has the most interesting window display for these sorts of events:

Rome: a unique sort of window shopping experience.

I was in Gammarelli’s a few months ago and some English-speaking girls – probably in their mid-20s – came in and requested red socks (which are used by cardinals). It was rather interesting. Me and the friend that I was with concluded that either they needed them for some sort of costume in a drama production, or maybe they had an uncle who was a cardinal! Or something. There’s always some interesting thing happening around here.
