Benedict XVI Attends Consistory in St. Peter’s

A big surprise this morning: Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI is attending the ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica (called a “consistory”), at which Pope Francis will make several new cardinals. Surely he is there at the Pope’s invitation. Here are two screenshots that I took from my tablet. Better-quality photos will be available soon, I’m sure. What a wonderful surprise!

Note in the above photo that he took off his zucchetto (white skullcap) as a sign of respect and reverence for Pope Francis. Bishops and Cardinals traditionally do this when they greet the Pope. Since Benedict XVI is no longer Pope, he has resumed this custom that he would have also observed before he was Pope.

I’ll post better photos later on.
