Penance Patrol

I hope everyone is having a penitential Ash Wednesday!

I was in a touristy part of town today where there were a lot of people eating outside. The idea came to me that it might be fun to go around and interrupt people just as they were lifting a fork with meat on it to their mouth. Are you sure you want to eat that!?

Some people have told me that they used to stay up till after midnight on Ash Wednesday so that they could eat some meat before going to bed. I might have done it once myself! See how soft we’ve become about doing penance?

Actually, I was wondering when the fasting was officially over today and if I’d have to stay up until 12:01 for dinner.

I would love to see video of your Penance Patrol, please.

    • In Canon Law, a day runs from midnight to midnight. So Ash Wednesday is over at 12:00am on 3/6/14, or in roughly 10.5 hours (your time, I think). So I suppose you could stay up and then eat whatever you didn’t eat throughout the course of the day. However, think of it this way: you will have stayed up late in fulfillment of the letter of the law, eaten a fair amount, then go on to eat the normal amount tomorrow. In the end, if we look at days in terms of “time that we are awake, not counting naps”, did you really fast then?

I don’t want to eat whatever I didn’t eat throughout the day, I just want a sandwich. Not that I’m complaining.

(I wouldn’t really stay up until midnight just so I could break a fast)
