Here is a locally-popular image of the Blessed Mother – enshrined in the wall above the high altar – in the main church of the town of Rocca di Papa, across the lake from Castel Gandolfo. It is fairly small, probably around 11×14″; I used my zoom lens to get the detail.
Even though it’s a painting, at various points they saw fit to add to the image a metal crown (that has some inset jewels) and halo/necklace, as well as a pearl earring. The necklace part has a small heart-shaped locket on it; who knows if there aren’t some names contained inside it or some other special intention?
Visual expressions of the people’s devotion, ex votos for answered prayers – all for the greater glory of God.
