Thirty Three Years

Thirty-three years ago, today…

…the Turkish assassin Mehmet Ali Agca shot Pope John Paul II in St. Peter’s Square.

Thanks to the protection of Our Lady of Fatima, the holy pope survived that attempt – the doctors considered that in itself miraculous – and he would later insert the bullet that they removed from his chest into the crown of the famous statue at Fatima.

Today, in St. Peter’s Square, you can see the spot where the assassination attempt took place (more information here):

Pope Saint John Paul II, pray for us!
