God the Father as Artist

An interesting artistic genre in Spanish and Spanish-American art – which I would love to know more about – is that of God the Father “painting” images of the Blessed Mother.

Until recently, I had only seen depictions of Him painting the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Such as these:

(If I’m ever in the money, I’m going to commission an artist to paint an image in this genre. It’s one of my favorite depictions of Our Lady of Guadalupe.)

Today, however, I was surprised to see this same genre applied to the Immaculate Conception.

The Blessed Mother is God the Father’s work of art, his masterpiece. If you zoom in, you can see the Latin verses coming from the mouths of Mary and the Father. The Blessed Mother says: “He who is mighty painted me splendidly”; God the Father, as if admiring his work, says: “It is most beautiful and without blemish”.

God’s masterpiece, the Blessed Mother, has inspired some of the most beautiful artwork in the world.
